The Deerfoot Inn & Casino is looking forward to hosting its second exciting Canadian Poker Tour (CPT) event November 8th – 12th, 2006, in Calgary, Alberta. The Deerfoot Inn & Casino hosted its inaugural CPT event, the Chrome Classic in May and although attendance was less than expected, managed to give away over $175,000 in prize money. In anticipation of the Deerfoot Open several measures have been taken to ensure a successful, player-friendly, large-payout tournament. It is the goal of Deerfoot to institute themselves as major players in the Canadian tournament scene. To do that, Deerfoot has established two annual events and are planning at minimum, two more.
The Deerfoot Open will begin with a $100 + $10 Satellite on Wednesday, November 8th at 5:00pm, in which tournament tokens will be issued in lieu of cash prizes allowing players to pick and choose the events of their choice. The first event will be held Thursday, November 9th beginning at noon and comprising a $300 + $25 No Limit Hold’em Freezeout. Friday, November 10th, will be a $500 + $35 No Limit Hold’em Freezeout. The Main Event for this tournament will be held on Saturday, November 11th, and will be a $1000 + $65 No Limit Hold’em Freezeout. The conclusion of the final event is featured on Sunday, November 12th, and it will be a $500 + $35 No Limit Hold’em Freezeout. All events will be CPT events with an estimated $500,000 in prize pools.
To boost attendance, daily satellites are running at 1:00pm and 7:30pm for $50+$5. The winners of these events will win tournament tokens as opposed to direct entry into any single event. The goal of the tournament tokens is to increase payouts in the individual Satellites as well as allow the players to choose which event they would like to play in. Deerfoot is also seeking co-promotion from other CPT participating cardrooms, whom they have contacted for interest in hosting satellites to the event. Locally, the ante has been upped for all Satellite players and are currently entering the names of participants into a draw in which the give away will be a Deerfoot Open tournament package consisting of entries into all events and hotel accommodations for 5 nights.
The Chrome Classic was an incredible experience for the Deerfoot Inn & Casino and believe that all the necessary steps have been taken to ensure that the Deerfoot Open will exceed all expectations. As the event is being hosted from Wednesday to Sunday, a weekend tournament rate will be provided by the hotel and free accommodations are extended to all out of town players who attended the Chrome Classic main event.
In addition, room rates have been arranged for those who attended the Chrome Classic but did not play in the main event. Pending availability, a shuttle service will transport players arriving from the Calgary International Airport. The in-house catering department will be on hand to provide meals in one of the banquet rooms. The Deerfoot Inn & Casino is also very proud to contribute a trip for 2 to Las Vegas, Nevada for the player who accumulates the most points throughout the Deerfoot Open. Several cash prizes will also be awarded for participation in the player-friendly event.
Conversions are working the 450-seat Chrome showroom into an exciting Vegas-style poker tournament room. The Chrome showroom will allow the possibility to host a 20-table poker tournament without disrupting the 8 tables of live action in the poker room. With this set-up, there is the luxury of hosting live games in the regular poker room, and once the tournament tables are vacated, the live action will be accommodated on all 16 tables.
Currently there are several limit and no limit tables being hosted daily in the regular poker room. To accommodate those twists of fate, a bad beat jackpot is being offered for all live games, and as an added bonus, Deerfoot is guaranteeing a portion of the prize pool for the Main Event as well as for the entire Deerfoot Open. Also note that a guaranteed $50,000 is being paid to the winner of the Main Event to outsell the Chrome Classic’s $175,000 prize pool. In the event that the Deerfoot Open does not meet the guaranteed amounts, the Sunday, November 12th’s tournament will be seeded to meet those guarantees.
The Deerfoot Inn & Casino is excited to be a part of the Canadian Poker Tour and look forward to strengthening that relationship by hosting successful and exciting poker tournaments. All the arrangements have been made to succeed and Deerfoot looks forward to the support of Canadian and North American poker players. For further information you can contact the Deerfoot Inn & Casino poker room at 403-723-4039 or visit the website at www.deerfootinn.com.
Click here to watch Canadian Poker Tour player Mike Hwang's interview from the 2006 World Series of Poker Main Event! The Canadian Poker Tour and Canadian Poker Player Magazine strive to be defining participants in uniting the Canadian poker industry with its players, in an effort to promote and encourage its longevity and success.
If you’re a new reader or long-time subscriber to Canadian Poker Player, you’ll sense the emphasis on Canadian Poker Player. While others magazines cater to particular aspects of poker or its players, our niche is the Canadian poker industry, its loyal participants, the places they play, contributing to their success, and the stories they tell.
The emails and calls I receive on a daily basis question that identity which makes it appropriate for the above Mission Statement. A Mission Statement is a slogan or description that small companies and huge corporations use to define what they want to accomplish and what direction they wish to follow in pursuit of success.
There are 3 generalities we would like to focus on as Canada’s leading poker magazine and largest tournament organizer:
- Relative size and strength
- Provincial support
- Unification
Through enthusiastic support from most of the casinos and cardrooms in Canada, we have made the first steps in unifying this country’s players and venues; since there is strength in numbers this enthusiasm will lead to greater exposure, expansion of tournaments and of course, more loot to be won.
Like an arranged marriage, the CPT is trying to pacify several interests and create an environment that is good for players, cardroom operators, and a successful image within the industry. More televised events, more new players entering the scene and more organization is required to promote one of the top-rated entertainment venues in the world. Among the many other projects in our pocket, the CPT and CPP want to direct this to benefit everyone.
There has been an inordinate amount of uncertainty and confusion surrounding the Canadian Poker Tour and Canadian Poker Player. There has also been some controversy regarding companies and individuals latching onto the popularity of the success of the CPT and some bewilderment as to what the CPT even does – some days I even ask myself, but let me explain what I can.
Any intelligent business or company with an industrious spirit will profit from trends in the economy and there is no debating that the strength of CPP and the CPT relies heavily on poker’s ascension into the realm of viable entertainment. The CPP has filled a niche no one else inhabited, which is a national Canadian publication that focuses on the Canadian poker player. The CPT is developing its own identity that in turn, is driven by the magazine’s exposure.
I’m quite sure Randy Hewines, the president of Fifth Street Publishers, was not the first to have this vision, nor the only one to pursue the viability of a Poker Tour. While he has not done it alone, his hard work and dedication has created a Canadian Poker Tour that features real players, playing for a real prize pool they paid into, and playing within real Canadian casinos and cardrooms. No other company or individual has satisfied all 3 factors.
There have been disruptive forces in the past, with more created everyday, which either attempt to undermine our efforts or falsely associate with the success and excitement of the Canadian Poker Tour. No need to mention names or point fingers, but suffice to say that I caution players to beware of organizations and people who claim otherwise – there is only one true Canadian Poker Tour.
I can better illustrate what the CPT doesn’t do:
- We are not a governing body that instructs casinos how to run their tournaments
- We do not charge “administration” or other fees for players to join the CPT, nor do we charge casinos to register
- We work in conjunction with existing tournament schedules and are not consulted when, how many or at what level these events operate
Season I saw some pretty spectacular events across the country, with larger buy-ins and increased player participation on the horizon. Season II has begun airing events and continues to film some of the highest quality poker-viewing on television.
Players need only register to belong to the CPT. This can be done online by downloading the printable file from our website and mailing it to our offices or else filling out a registration form that is available at all CPT events. There is no fee or restrictions on who can register, except that they must be of legal casino age for that province. Players must re-register for each new Season, which begins August 1st each year.
Points for Season I and II are accumulated for registered players at the rate of 1 point = $1 for money finishes. Results and standings are posted regularly on our websites. For Season III we are using the International Poker Rankings system that will distribute points in a fair system that compensates for larger entrant pool and higher buy-ins.
Casinos and cardrooms must register every CPT event with us and normally we are affiliated with their larger annual and regular events. Some Canadian poker rooms have chosen not to affiliate with the CPT or are not large enough to hold tournaments. The main restriction is that CPT events must be held in licensed gaming facilities.
