Draw Poker Rules Mike Caro: Draw Poker Expert

Draw poker is a true bluffing game, as there are no exposed cards, and no players can have any idea of what you have. The only info you can gather is watching how many cards players 'draw'. It is a game that was very popular 20+ years ago, and is still very popular at home games. You won't find draw poker at too many casinos, but you can still find it at many of our Online Poker rooms. You will also see draw poker alot at video poker games, and at strip poker games.

Mike 'mad genius' Caro (pictured left) is considered one of the top draw poker players around. He played draw poker as a pro during the 70's and 80's, and has great knowledge on draw poker. He is also the author of Caro's Poker Tells, a best selling poker book on reading players based on their actions at the poker table.

Recommended Draw Poker Room:Full Tilt Poker Room

Full Tilt Poker is one of the biggest Draw poker rooms around, with both cash games and tournaments.

Deal:
Draw poker is usually played with an ante. Each player is dealt 5 cards, all face down. There is then a round of betting starting to the left of the dealer. After all players have checked, called, or folded, the remaining players decide how many (if any) cards they want to discard. They then receive that number of cards back from the dealer. Again, there is a round of betting, and the player with the best hand takes the pot.

Variations:
Draw poker has the most variations from any poker game. You can play with wild cards (2's wild is popular), requirements for opening (Jacks or better), you can change the maximum number of cards to be drawn, the number of drawing rounds, and just about anything else you want. A few more Draw Poker Strategy points:

  • If you've got nothing in your hand, get out.
  • If you've got a cinch hand, make them pay to see it.
  • If they've got you beat, fold.
  • The goal is to beat the other players, not have the highest hand. If everyone else folds, you take the pot.
  • Don't try to beat a better player: if you're lucky, you'll win small; if you're not, you'll lose big.
  • There's an even chance that you won't better your opening hand.
